The Verna and Peter Dauterive Hall (VPD) is an interdisciplinary social sciences building; combining university office, study and collaborative spaces at USC. The upgraded space provides a critical link in the University’s efforts to attract sought-after talent, including faculty and students alike. A one-of-a-kind, educational social sciences space devoted to collaboration around real-world problem-solving, this facility serves several schools, each with distinct business needs.
Creative Integration of University Office, Study and Collaborative Spaces
Designing and executing this first-of-its-kind social science space in a university setting required a capable, creative and experienced team. Working closely with Jan Edson and USC’s Capital Construction Development and HKS Architects, Pacific Office Interiors collaborated to satisfy the functional and practical needs of all departments, matching each space to the end user’s working habits.
The breathtaking interior includes a full-height open atrium that provides natural sunlight throughout each floor. Daylight cascades through the interior, playing off the custom chandelier, which serves as the central jewel of VPD’s box-in-a-box design.
Furnishing a Unique Space
To invite informal collaboration, facilitate independent study and accommodate accidental meetings, Pacific Office Interiors placed Coalesee’s SW_1 lounge chairs and tables around the perimeter of the atrium on each floor. Natural sunlight and bright splashes of color create a vibrant and lively atmosphere.
For office spaces, Pacific Office Interiors pulled from the extensive Haworth offerings. Haworth’s Compose workstations were paired with the Very ergonomic task chairs in open office spaces. For the private offices, Master Series wood veneer desks were chosen. For seating, the offices were furnished with the Zody ergonomic task chairs and the Candor wood guest seating.
