Design and Furniture for Healthcare

Doctors Exam Room Furniture and Design

Are you beginning a project to build or redesign your hospital department, doctor’s office or other medical facility? Interior design and furniture for healthcare spaces is a specialty set apart from commercial design for other industries. For starters, OSHA and CalOSHA regulations elevate healthcare projects to a whole new level of importance because the fabric and finishes used in medical facilities must resist passing on pathogens and hold up to frequent cleaning and sanitation. And the quality and durability of the furniture itself must meet standards generally higher than those for corporate spaces because of the higher amount of use.

Pacific Office Interiors creates designs for medical facilities that exceed the most demanding healthcare standards. Let us show you how we can make your medical facility’s interior design and furniture project a success.

Putting You, and Design, First

At Pacific Office Interiors, we lead with design rather than product. What does this mean to you and your medical facility’s project? It means we start our working relationship listening to your needs, expectations, aims and goals. We learn as much as possible about how your hospital, doctors’ offices, clinic, lab or other medical facility will use each space today and in the future. We also work to understand your measures of success for the job.

Designing and Furnishing Medical Facilities for 35 Years

Pacific Office Interiors’ experience with design and furniture for healthcare has been developed over more than 35 years. During that time, we have served the following facility types:

Hospitals

These projects can involve the full spectrum of needs to support in-patient and out-patient services, accommodate visitors and serve employee ergonomic and technological access needs.

Doctors’ Offices

With COVID, visits to individual doctors’ offices may have temporarily declined in favor of some telehealth services. However, when patients visit their doctors, their comfort, safety and ergonomic support are as important as ever.

Urgent Care Facilities

Urgent Care is growing in popularity, especially for the uninsured and underinsured. Commonly standalone, these facilities have all the needs of a hospital emergency room; waiting, reception, patient areas. Medical carts are an asset here, enabling staff to take necessary medical equipment from patient to patient.

Hospital Waiting Room furniture for families

Labs and Clinical Facilities

These facilities require reception, registration, consultation offices and waiting areas. Sample collection and imaging are standard requirements.

Medical Spas and Specialized Medical Facilities

These facilities may look more like hospitality spaces than doctors’ offices. They deliver elective procedures and treatments and are sometimes described as high-end, luxurious spaces.

Behavioral Healthcare Facilities

These facilities face an added challenge; because of the nature of the patients, there are specific requirements to ensure the furniture and other furnishings cannot be used in harmful ways.

Senior Living Facilities

Self-care to full-care facilities fall into this category and include common areas, dining rooms, lounges, individual living spaces, recreational spaces, theaters and more. Cleaning and sanitation are essential in public and full-care spaces. And all of the above types of medical facilities can be found within a Senior Living Facility.

Healthcare Spaces – Familiar Territory for Pacific Office Interiors

When looking at new interior design and furniture for healthcare projects, Pacific Office Interiors often capitalizes on its depth of experience in other areas like corporate offices, government, education and hospitality.

How does this benefit your project? Using our experience in creating designs and selecting, installing and maintaining furniture for these spaces, we take their best practices and meld them into your design, creating spaces that perform and delight…and that also meet all sanitary and cleanliness requirements

For example, depending upon the facility type and purpose, your facility may require interior design and furniture for several of the following:

  • Private offices
  • Administrative and support areas
  • Labs
  • Pharmacies
  • Cafeterias
  • Retail areas
  • Lobby, reception and waiting areas
  • Conference rooms
  • Training areas
  • Locker rooms
  • Employee lounges
  • Visiting areas
  • Outdoor spaces
  • Sports areas
  • Chapels
  • Counseling and consultation rooms
  • IT support areas including mass device charging

Using design elements from spaces familiar to most people outside a healthcare setting creates a welcoming and calming feel, part of a growing trend in healthcare design.

Design and Furniture for Healthcare – Developing Trends

Antimicrobial Finishes and Fabrics

Manufacturers like Haworth and the Global Furniture Group already offer fabrics and finishes that hold up to the most vigorous cleaning regimens. Recently, they and other of our strategic partners began building in antimicrobial properties that result in furniture with surfaces that kill germs and bacteria on their own between cleanings.

One technique infuses fabric and hard surfaces with the natural antibacterial elements of silver, copper and brass. Another technique incorporates antibacterial elements in high quality vinyl. An example is the Keef from Woodstock. These vinyls act the same way as the metallic elements, killing bacteria on contact and significantly improving sanitation. This is especially important on the arm caps which receive the most direct contact.

Applications: Hospitals, Doctors’ Offices, Medical Facilities, Urgent Care, Clinics, Labs

Attention to Ergonomics

Ergonomics solutions for corporate uses are showing up in design and furniture for healthcare. Nursing stations are receiving ergonomically correct workstations and seating. Also receiving proper ergonomic solutions are physician, management, consultation and counseling offices and conference, meeting and training areas.

Applications: Hospitals, Medical Facilities, Urgent Care

Technology Integration

Technology is driving change in healthcare delivery. It’s increasingly common to see digital solutions in nurse workstations, telehealth applications, wall-mounted workstations and medical carts. These advances are taking medical technology to the patient in ways not possible before. And, requires accommodating ubiquitous network and power requirements and supporting mass device recharging.

One of our strategic partners is ergotron, a leader in this rapidly changing facet of design and furniture for healthcare spaces. Their ergonomically correct medical cart designs incorporate the features and capabilities healthcare professionals demand.

Application: Hospitals, Medical Facilities, Clinics, Urgent Care, Labs

Telehealth

Telehealth is an increasingly popular consultation and diagnosis option as social distancing mandates limit in-person visits. Our partner, ergotron, offers Telehealth units in various forms, ranging from wall-mounted workstations to mobile carts. Mobile carts are especially useful in off-site applications, including inoculation clinics and drive-through testing.

Application: Hospitals, Medical Facilities, Doctors’ Offices, Clinics

Public Areas

Furniture for public areas must accommodate people of all ages, sizes and fitness. For waiting areas, manufacturers are now offering matching adult and child furniture. Furniture must accommodate both physically large and frail individuals, allowing the user to move, sit and rise comfortably and confidently.
